More confidence with the Road Safety Exam App

Every spring for over 85 years, Veilig Verkeer Nederland has organised the Road Safety exam. 90% of all primary schools get involved with group 7 or 8. By doing so, 170,000 children every year learn how to take part in traffic safely. The exam is part of VVN's objective: road safety for everyone.

Children prepare for the practical exam at home. VVN wants to give children and parents tools. The diploma should also feel like a bigger milestone, to emphasise the importance of road safety. And finally, there is the challenge that the exam makes some children feel slightly too anxious...

We partnered with VVN to develop the Road Safety Exam App. Children love using apps. They use them a lot and they are a fun way to learn. Over the course of four weeks, the exam app prepares them for the practical exam. The app includes a chat function, instruction videos and activities. So, when they come to do the exam, every child is well prepared and confident.

Marijcke de Groot, VVN

‘We wanted a creative concept that reflected the need of both children and parents. The app is the perfect answer. The partnership between our didactic team and TinQwise was excellent. Their wide educational knowledge really adds value. They translated our modules in a fun, instructive and creative way. The result is amazing!'

More than knowledge transfer

In fact, knowledge transfer is not the main goal in the Road Safety exam app. It is more important to remind children to take care when crossing the road after the exam too. The app also makes them more resilient and stronger in exciting situations, now and in the future.

More than knowledge transfer

This is Dan

To perform well, you need a coach. Dan is a bit older and he's done the exam already. He's your chat buddy in the app. How he talks appeals to children. The chat addresses various subjects, like the route, the bike check and the exam itself. Anything that might make children anxious is presented in time. And Dan makes jokes so that you start to look forward to the exam.

Bite-sized theory

Bite-sized theory

In the chat with Dan, the theory is repeated in bite-sized portions. How do you turn right and how do you approach a roundabout? Videos show how you apply the traffic rules. And if you've had enough, put it on your To-Do list.

Activities

The app contains three activities which children do with their parents. So, passing the exam becomes a joint goal and shared responsibility.

At school every week, the teacher asks the children how they are getting on with the app. That encourages them even more. Online and offline worlds merge and reinforce each other.

Confidence

Dan knows that you might be bit nervous before the exam. He tells you not to worry and gives you tips. The child feels understood, more in control and more confident. The app makes feeling emotions recognisable and safe. A lesson for everyone!

Passed!

The focus on the exam, the coaching and all the exercises increase the chance of success. Through all the attention, the road safety diploma becomes an important and festive milestone. The children feel proud and realise that they can now really take part in traffic. And do so safely.
